About Meals on Wheels

Wynnum and Manly District Meals on Wheels commenced operation from a modern kitchen capable of producing  hundreds of hot nutritious meals per day on 15 May 2020.

Fundraising to build this magnificent facility commenced in 1998 with the late Irene Edwards OAM, a volunteer for 31 years playing a major role as fundraiser.  The facility was completed in June 2019 free of debt costing just under $4million.

Centrally located at 880 Manly Road Wakerley volunteers deliver 33,000 meals each year in the Wynnum/Manly District, including  Hemmant, Gumdale, Wakerley, Tingalpa, Belmont, Murrarie and Cannon Hill.

The kitchen has an accredited Five-Star Food Service Rating for excellent food safety by the Brisbane City Council.  The centre also has an auditorium with seating for up to 160 people, and a welcoming volunteer lounge and kitchen, plus training facilities and a boardroom equipped for tele-conferencing.

Environmentally-friendly, the centre is capable of water harvesting up to 50,000 litres, and has a facility for charging electric vehicles. There are also 80 solar panels, soon to be backed up with nine batteries, providing a total system size of 31.95 KWH.

For the past 54 years freshly-cooked meals and have been prepared on weekdays, with frozen meals available for weekends.  Frozen meals are provided for all public holidays, including Christmas and Easter.

The centre relies on a wonderful group of volunteers, who are the backbone of the service, to deliver the meals to the frail, aged and younger people with disabilities.

“We do what we do best. Our volunteers deliver much more than a freshly prepared nutritious home-style cooked meals,” said president Ken Edwards OAM said.

“Our volunteers provide a friendly smile and social interaction with the frail, aged and younger people with disabilities, checking  on their well-being.  Our Volunteers may be the only people the recipients see.”

Meals on Wheels welcomes new volunteers.
