FROM REDLAND CITY COUNCIL
All visitors to Redland City Council’s Recycling and Waste Centres are urged to be aware of on-site safety requirements when they make a ‘trip to the tip’.
Visitors should treat a trip to the tip in the same way as a trip to a construction site or workplace.
Council’s mainland Recycling and Waste Centres receive more than 408,000 visitors annually and they share the facilities with trucks, machinery, fellow customers and staff.
In 2023-24, almost 38,000 tonnes of domestic waste was received at Birkdale and Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centres, with 71 per cent recycled.
Council and Council contractors are committed to keeping everyone safe at these busy sites, however there are reports of an increase in the number of visitors disregarding safety instructions from site staff.
Site staff play an important role in keeping everyone safe, traffic moving and the site operating.
Visitors are urged to follow the instructions of staff and all safety messaging, be patient and avoid aggressive behaviour towards staff.
All visitors should follow the site rules when visiting a Recycling and Waste Centre:
- Follow site staff instructions
- Be respectful to staff and fellow customers – treat staff as you would wish to be treated at your workplace
- Sort your load before you arrive
- Stop at the gatehouse and declare all waste
- Unload waste into the right stockpiles or bins
- No smoking or fires
- No scavenging and do not remove any materials from the site
- Obey road rules, including speed limits of 20km/h within the facilities
- Children and animals must remain in vehicles at all times.
October is National Safe Work month, and Council is committed to keeping the community and all site staff safe while managing the city’s waste and recycling.
