Harbourside Physie & Dance recently took to the national stage to compete in the Australian Physie & Dance (APDA) National Champion Girls’ Finals. Eighteen students represented the club from the Wynnum/Manly area, competing against clubs from all over Australia. Seven of these students placed in the top six in their respective age groups, with two of the club’s teachers receiving the prestigious title of National Champion.
Harbourside was founded in 2018 as a non-profit club, offering physie and dance classes in Manly and Wynnum. Classes combine the sport of physie and the art of dance, focusing on movement, musicality, technique, flexibility, cardio and strength in every class.
Teaching from the Australian Physie and Dance Association syllabus, students are challenged with new choreography each year that helps to build self-esteem, self-confidence and sportsmanship.
In addition to improving physical fitness, flexibility, and coordination, physie establishes correct posture and technique. The teachers facilitate classes that create a sense of community and enhance students’ social skills, discipline and determination, all while incorporating a range of genres into one class. Genres include Ballet, Modern Dance, Contemporary, Pilates, and Lyrical – just to name a few. Most of all, it’s fun!
Registrations for 2025 are open now, and classes range from three years to adulthood. For beginners, no experience is necessary. For the tiny dancers, Tiny Tot classes (three to four years) and Junior classes (five to six years, and seven to eight years) are the perfect introduction to dance, where they can learn the fundamentals of dance in a supportive and fun environment. Physie is also an excellent option for those wanting to return to a dance sport for recreation.
