BY JULIE DIXON

Built in 1890 and beautifully restored in 1984 by the Wynnum/Manly community, the Shire Clerk’s Cottage is currently maintained and preserved by the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre.

The Shire Clerk’s Cottage and Devonshire Teas are a unique experience.

From the time you are greeted by Iris Brewer, our pink lady, who was Chair of the Restoration Committee for the Shire Clerk’s Cottage, you will be transported back in time to a much more genteel era. Beautifully furnished with donations from the general public, the cottage gives an insight into how the family would have lived 130 years ago.

The Shire Clerk’s Cottage Devonshire Teas are made on the premises at the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre on the day by our president Bev Weeks (you can’t get fresher than that). The strawberry jam is home made by our resident ‘Pink Lady’, Iris Brewer. Sadly, we don’t have our own cow to produce the fresh cream. Although they did in the past.

The Devonshire Teas are served on beautiful china on tables laid with lace tablecloths, and floral decorations made by our Secretary, Sandy Lawton, and Market Coordinator, Julie Dixon.

We appreciate the volunteers from the Boomerang Bags, coordinated by Louise Yearn, and our Zumba group. You will be entertained by Laurie Blauw on piano accordion, playing songs you know and love. All proceeds go to the maintenance and daily running of WBLC and the cottage.
