For many people, the word ‘recorder’ brings back memories of squeaky renditions of Hot Cross Buns in primary school. Like learning any instrument, those early efforts can be a little hard on the ears!

But when eight experienced musicians come together, performing recorder arrangements spanning Handel to John Williams, the result is something else entirely – rich expressive music that can be hauntingly beautiful and even inspiring.

Students in Years 3 and 4 at Wynnum West State School recently experienced this transformation during a performance by a local recorder ensemble. This dedicated group meets weekly, not for fame, but for the joy of making music together – an example of the opportunities within our local community.

Students described the performance as calming and peaceful, while others were fascinated by how pitch changed with the size of the instruments. Many were amazed at the musicians’ skill and memory, and all were impressed by the evident hard work.

Experiences like this highlight the value of local community groups. They provide enriching opportunities for young people to see what is possible beyond the classroom.

It was an inspiring morning. One teacher even admitted the performance had changed her long-held views on the instrument. “They were so beautiful,” she said. “Loved it.”
