Capalaba will come alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of Poland this September when the annual Wiosna (Spring) Festival returns, transforming the Redlands into what feels like a vibrant European village for the day.
Now in its 29th year, the festival will be held at the Polish Ex-servicemen’s Association (SPK) in Holland Crescent on Sunday, September 20, from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
SPK President Magda Myszkowski said the festival was established to unite Brisbane’s Polish community and to share their rich heritage with others.
“The Redlands has become a popular place for many Polish families to settle, drawn by its relaxed bayside lifestyle and beautiful coastal surroundings.
“With a jam-packed program, visitors can enjoy a full day of Polish traditions, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.
“Whether you’re Polish or just curious about our culture, everyone is welcome, there will be traditional folk dancing, live music, cultural displays, market stalls, workshops, children’s activities and plenty of opportunities to learn about Polish traditions from the people who proudly keep these traditions alive.”
The festival will also showcase Collections, a collective exhibition featuring more than 20 Brisbane artists of Polish heritage. Opening on September 12, the exhibition will remain on display during the festival, with most artworks available to purchase.
Food lovers are also in for a treat, with Magda encouraging visitors to sample some of Poland’s best-loved traditional dishes.
“Pierogi are an absolute must – they’re Poland’s most famous comfort food,” she said. “I’d also recommend trying our traditional cakes and sweets, and for the adults, a Polish beer.”
The event is free to attend and is volunteer-run, with proceeds supporting the Polish House and other fun-filled community events held throughout the year.
