WOLF is a production by acclaimed performance group Circa, and it explores the workings of our limbic brain as well as the absolute extremes of physical expression and endurance. Yaron Lifschitz, CEO and Artistic Director of Circa, says that WOLF demonstrates Circa’s versatility.
“Our recent shows have been about humanness and warmth and emotion – but what about the inner animal qualities of ferocity and desire that sit deep inside us? Given that we seem to be doing our best to de-civilise ourselves, it’s a timely moment to get in touch with some of those elements of ourselves. The wolf is always hungry.”
Circa’s world-renowned talents are more than equal to the demands of what Yaron calls “a stonkingly powerful work.”
“We look long and hard for the right acrobats who have to be physically extraordinary and capable of a very high performance level. They bring big passions and fierce, brutal energy to the stage; you get to see the body in full flight. Everyone has to find their own wolf. Some are slinky and sensuous, some are rough – each has a different kind of flavour, but they all have to accommodate each other in small groups and as a pack – and as a wolf-person intermediary.”
Yaron says that recent research has challenged the theory of pack “alpha” animals, which was conducted in zoos. “Wild wolf packs are based on the family: there’s status within the family, but it’s basically about survival.”
The show has played to full houses in Edinburgh, Prague, Berlin and Paris; the teeth and claws and excitement come to the Redlands on Friday 25 September – and there’s a full moon on the 26th. Breathe deep and book now.
