The whales are back in the bay! I know this is a fishing report, but you really can’t beat seeing these majestic mammals in our backyard. I’ve seen mums and their babies feeding in front of my eyes and some small pods only minutes out from the Bay Islands – it’s too special for words.
The whales started showing up in August, but in September, you’ll spot them all over the bay. They will be around Peel Island just out from Cleveland, off Wellington Point, Green and St Helena Islands, and all the way to the Sand Hills.
Be careful to keep your distance from the whales. There are big fines for not doing the right thing, so it is best just to stop the boat and let them swim past or let them get close to look at you. The family (and especially the kids) will absolutely love it. I have seen them so many times, and still, if I see them when I’m out on the bay, fishing takes second place or gets forgotten completely. Take the opportunity to get out and see them so close to home.
As for September fishing, we are back fishing for snapper as the season has re-opened, and the whiting and school mackerel will be on the chew…but I have to say, whale watching comes first this month!
