Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) will host its first ever Women’s Keelboat Regatta on the 30 May 2021.
“Women’s keelboat regattas have been created to address the historical gender bias in competitive yachting and break down barriers to entry, to encourage women to get out on the water and perform in the key roles of skipper, tactician, main trim and bow person,” said organiser Kate Kenny.
Kate explained that this will be the first time RQYS has hosted a women’s keelboat regatta, but the precedent for these events has been set by sailing clubs in Sydney and Melbourne. Adding a Brisbane event creates a national circuit, attracting competitors from around the country and showcases the area’s brightest jewel, Moreton Bay.
“Sailing is a big part of the bayside lifestyle, and we hope you will join us in welcoming this new and exciting event for women in our community and beyond.
“To make the event a success and to attract as many competitors as possible and their families to the region, we are hoping to put together a generous prize pool. If you are a local business and want to donate goods or services, a gift voucher or cash prize, please get in touch via [email protected],” said Kate.
Alternatively, if you are a lady who is interested in sailing in this regatta, whether you’ve had a little or a lot of experience with boats, you are invited to join the Facebook group – RQYS Ladies Sailing.
The Brisbane Women’s Keelboat Regatta is supported by SheSails, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Australian Sailing.
