FROM CLEVELAND YACHT CLUB
Cleveland Yacht Club recently hosted its 54th annual Peel Island Marathon, bringing together 53 boats and more than 160 competitors, volunteers, and supporters for a spectacular day of racing on the waters of Moreton Bay.
Sailors were treated to ideal autumn conditions, with a westerly breeze ranging from 5 to 15 knots, offering tactical challenges and exhilarating sailing around the picturesque Peel Island. The diverse fleet included local club racers and visiting boats from all over South-East Queensland, all enjoying the community-focused atmosphere the race is known for.
“Our Peel Island regatta is about more than just sailing – it’s about community,” said Club Commodore Steve Lawry. “With the backing of our sponsors and the energy of over 160 people involved, this year’s event was one of our best yet.”
A key highlight of this year’s event was the introduction of a large cruising catamaran to act as the committee vessel, generously supplied by Aria Cruises. Its size and visibility greatly improved race management and received high praise from the fleet. With six safety boats on duty, a dedicated volunteer crew, and an enthusiastic crowd, the Peel Island Marathon continues to grow in size, reputation, and spirit. Planning for next year’s event is already underway.
The race was proudly presented by major sponsor Sunstate Hobie, with generous support from Aria Cruises, Redland City Marina, and The Lighthouse Restaurant. Their involvement helped ensure a well-run event, both on and off the water, and great prizes.
Cleveland Yacht Club is open to all beach classes of dinghies and catamarans for recreational sailing and racing, along with a recently added surf ski paddling group.
The club is always looking for extra volunteers to help run the regular events, and crews to handle the club’s support boats. More details on the club can be found on their webpage www.cyc.asn.au.
