Local not-for-profit SAILS at Bayside is charting a course toward greater inclusion, thanks to a funding boost through the Port of Brisbane’s Community Grants Program.
The organisation, one of 12 recipients in the Port’s annual $100,000 grant funding program, runs sailing and kayaking activities for groups working with at-risk youth, disadvantaged members of the community, and the general public.
The programs offer more than just time on the water – they provide connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging for young people in the Bayside region.
With the new funding, SAILS at Bayside hopes to welcome even more participants aboard.
SAILS at Bayside president Ian Carr said the funding will help cover event-specific costs for groups working with at-risk youth and disadvantaged members of the community, and help fund more volunteer training to enable SAILS to make their activities accessible, safe and engaging.
“For many of the young people we work with, it’s their first time experiencing the freedom and joy of being out on the water. It’s a powerful way to build trust, resilience and life skills.”
Port of Brisbane Community Relations Manager, Edward Harwood, said the Port was proud to get behind initiatives that make a real difference in the Bayside community.
“We’re proud to be part of the vibrant and diverse Bayside community. Supporting organisations like SAILS at Bayside that strengthen community connections is exactly what our grants program is all about.”
