Peter Cumming’s Local Area Update - The Community Leader and Real Estate New and Views

Councillor for Wynnum Manly Ward

McDonald Family we say Thank you

A great era in Manly’s history will come to an end when the McDonald family leaves the Manly Hotel on the 30th September 2021.

The McDonald Family have been the lessees of the Manly Hotel for 51 years.

The McDonald Family were very generous to the public. They provided prizes for community raffles. It was as though they could not say no.

In addition, many community groups benefited because the McDonalds had allowed them to sell raffle tickets at the Hotel. There were many others over the years. The McDonalds were heavily involved in the Chamber of Commerce, Halloween and numerous other events over the years.

Finally ‘The Manly’ has been blessed by having so many well liked long term staff work for so long at the hotel.

Some staff have been there for many years. Thousands of people have worked for shorter periods at the ‘Manly’.

The community will miss Doug on the morning shift, Jenny on the day shift and Sandy on the evening shift.

I wish the McDonalds a long and happy retirement.

Upgrade to the bush path bridge – Lota

A new bridge will be installed over the water course which runs down the hill from Lota House to the Esplanade at Lota.

The bridge enables bushwalkers to get up to the look out which provides a nice view over the Bay.

Walkers can go via the bridge and the earth pathway which leads you further north up the Esplanade.

The old bridge was wooden and has deteriorated especially where it touches the ground.  The new bridge is to be supplied by Wagners will be built using a fibre reinforced polymer material which has a 50 year life expectancy.  White ants can’t eat it.

The alternative is to follow the bitumen path from the corner of Armytage and Grace Streets straight down to the Esplanade..

Construction is expected to take 8 – 12 weeks, and be completed before Christmas.
