COUNCILLOR FOR WYNNUM MANLY WARD

On the 20th September it was a pleasure to welcome and swear in new Australians into our community at my annual Citizenship Ceremony.

The Ceremony is approved by the Department of Immigration and my office puts the event together.

Last month over 60 people joined with family and friends at the Wynnum RSL to pledge their new home as Australia.  Citizens came from all around the world including Columbia, Bulgaria, Mexico, France, South Africa, Iran and Denmark to name a few.

It was good to see 90% of the new citizens came from the Wynnum Manly Ward and others from adjoining suburbs.

I again welcome all new citizens to our shores and hope they do well and their children do even better.

Dog Registration

Brisbane City Council has put together a colourful registration tag collection for pet owners.

The dog registration tags are a fun way to ensure you are reunited with your dog should they wander away.  They come in various colours and in the shape of a bone, made out of aluminium.

In the Brisbane City Council area it is a requirement to register your dog over 12 weeks of age. To order your new registration tag or for any dog registration details visit brisbane.qld.gov.au, or phone 3403 8888 24/7.

In addition, I have been pleased to note that Council has met the request of local residents to install two extra dog poo bag dispensers along the Esplanade.  Many residents have raised concerns that there were no dispensers along the Esplanade.  There are two new dispensers one near the Wynnum Wading Pool Park and the other is at George Clayton Park.  Council does advise on their website that dog owners must be responsible for the collection of any droppings, but have supplied two dispensers as a courtesy.

Kitchener Park Playground Upgrade

There will be a great new playground at Kitchener Park, corner of West Avenue and Stradbroke Avenue Wynnum.

Public Consultation will be held on Saturday 9th October from 9am to 11am.  If you would like to see the plans come and speak with Council staff and myself to find out more.

Parking in Brisbane

The Council has published a Parking Guide to Brisbane.  It is very handy if you are driving into the City.

It provides information on the 15min free parking options, tips on what the signs and road markings mean as well as a guide to Traffic Areas that are regulated parking zones near venues like The Gabba, South Bank and PA Hospital.

My office has copies if you would like to drop in and collect, or you can read online at brisbane.qld.gov.au. Motorists who don’t understand the system get fined regularly in these areas.

Wynnum Parking has always been of concern for residents and shoppers.  Recently I was advised that parking bays are being used all day due to the lack of Council enforcement.  I have asked Council staff to visit and monitor parking in the area. Please comply or risk being fined.

Christmas Cakes

Locally we have been lucky to have the local Lions Club provide Christmas Cakes and Puddings for sale.  This year we will have the Rotary Cakes and Puddings for sale as well.  Details of prices and locations will be out soon.

I will promote further details in my weekly community e-newsletter once I have more information.

Email Newsletter

You can receive my community newsletter by contacting my office with your email address.  This is an informative e-newsletter that is sent out weekly with a guide to ‘What’s Happening’ in the Wynnum Manly Ward.  It lists community events that are being held, when the local theatre productions are held and a lot more.  Email me to subscribe at [email protected]

Parkrun Legend

Javana has reached two outstanding numbers on the same day at Wynnum Parkrun. On the 18th of September, she completed her 300th run and in a solid time, then completed her 50th volunteer day as well.

Well done Javana.
