COUNCILLOR FOR WYNNUM MANLY WARD

Welcome to Autumn, March brings the cooler change and a couple of major events. Sunday March 6 is Clean up Australia Day and Tuesday March 8 is International Women’s Day.

Annually I host a clean up event and this year it is at Lota, along the mangroves from 6am to 8am, meeting at the picnic shed near the Pelican artwork. We are fortunate that many residents regularly pick up litter and keep our Bayside community clean. Annually a number of volunteers put on their gloves, gum boos and hats and take the time to help out. There are other events held in the Wynnum Manly Ward so if this time is not suitable, you may find another at www.cleanup.org.au

I also remind residents in Manly West that your kerbside collection starts Monday 7 March.

I value the women in my life, both at home and in my office. Without them my life would definitely be more difficult. Thank you to each of them. International Women’s Day in 2022 continues to bring awareness on equality and respect in our society. It will be a good day when we do not read or hear news stories about abuse, bullying, and domestic violence or underpaid workers due to gender.

Every year I attend events for IWD. I am pleased to be able to show my support for women in our community. This year, there are four local events being held around the community to celebrate and acknowledge women. The local events are:

  • Sunday 6 March The Wynnum Community Changing Lanes is having a morning tea to acknowledge women in the community at the Waterloo Bay Hotel.
  • Sunday 6 March at Wynnum RSL a charity lunch in aid of Dementia Ph Linda 0428 419 157 $49pp
  • Tuesday 8 March 7am Wynnum Manly Rotary is hosting breakfast at Wynnum Golf Club $36 book viahttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/international-womens-day-breakfast-tickets-259204637047
  • Tuesday 8 March BWIB are hosting lunch at Wynnum Manly Leagues Club $75 book via https://www.baysidewomeninbusiness.org/
Developments get Bigger on the Bayside

A new development application has been put to Council for a 68 unit complex at the corner of Ronald and Andrew Streets, Wynnum. You can view the plans on the Council website via www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/planning

The site was home to long term business Manson’s Frames and the warehouse complex at the back of this building. Building units on the railway line will provide residents with direct access to good and reliable public transport and other amenities. I support the DA provided it complies with the Neighbourhood Plan. The additional population will give Wynnum Central businesses a boost.

Another unit block has been approved for 75 Tingal Road, Wynnum, on the corner with Chestnut Street.

27 units have been approved on a 1215 sq. block. The name of the project is Catalina. It will be a five storey building.

BCC free native plant program

Now is a great time to be in the garden. Council has available to home owners once a year two FREE
Native Plants:

If you would like to collect your voucher, drop into my office with your rates notice and or if you rent, a written authority from the property owner or property manager from the current financial year. Public housing residents must provide evidence of a recent rental payment.

My staff will provide you with an authorised Free Native Plants voucher which you take to a participating retail nursery and exchange your voucher for two free native plants.

Changes to the Manly Images

In December I opened the new space on the Manly Esplanade, near Cambridge Parade. The nighttime lighting has been updated.

The new series that has been installed is Quandamooka Sea Life as pictured below. There are 4 series, the turtle image is below and the total series and more information can be viewed here:-
