A new kitten can make a lovely addition to your family. There are several factors to consider to ensure you are properly prepared to help your kitten settle into your home.
Kitten proofing your home
- • Remove any toxic plants from your home. There are a number of plants that are toxic to cats, notably lilies.
- • Keep dangerous chemicals and medications stored safely out of reach.
- • Keep electrical cables covered or tied away with cable ties and use plug socket covers.
- • Keep small objects, strings, plastic bags, foam and hair ties well out of reach.
Kitten proofing your garden
- Ensure fences and gates are high enough to keep cats confined to your yard and ensure any holes are filled.
- Remove toxic garden plants.
- Keep cats away from ponds and water features.
- Store dangerous items such as fertiliser, insecticides, paint and solvents in a secure location.
Make sure you are prepared to meet the kitten’s needs
Items you will need for a new kitten include:
- Bedding.
- A secure carry case for trips in the car.
- Bowls for food and water.
- Food. Find out what food your kitten has been fed prior to joining your home and continue to feed this at least initially. If you are planning to change your kitten’s food, do so gradually to prevent stomach upsets. Choose a food appropriate for your kitten’s growth stage.
- Litter tray.
- Cleaning equipment – an enzyme-based cleaner can be useful for cleaning up any accidents.
- Grooming equipment.
Prepare family and other pets to meet your new kitten
- Ask family to let the kitten approach them rather than rushing and crowding them. Encourage gentle handling of your kitten, especially by children.
- Give your kitten a quiet place to rest – kittens can sleep for 20 hours a day!
- Allow your kitten to see other pets from a distance before introducing them. Keep dogs on a lead and give adult cats space to get away if they are overwhelmed.
Taking time to ensure you are well prepared and introducing a kitten carefully into your house can lead to a positive experience for everyone!
