There are plenty of days in October when the winds are strong, but there are also those beautiful calm days when fishing is fun for the whole family, so take advantage of them!

This time of the year, the whiting usually are prolific in the Small Boat Channel, the Rous Channel, the Sand Hills and Blue Hole, close in north-east of Darcy Light and on the northern side of the leads at a 6 to 8-ft depth.

The school mackerel will be in close and all the way through to the Naval Banks and east of Ormiston. I recommend trying the Rainbow Channel and the basin at Peel this time of year, but we are lucky to have good fish this close in.

There’s also plenty of squire and snapper around this time of year, close to Green, St Helena, Mud and Peel Islands, and the artificial reefs – just find the drop-offs and burly up some scraps, and you should attract a few good fish.

For the family going out for a swim and wanting to enjoy the bay, the whales and calves are on the move, so it’s worth spending the time to look for them anywhere from Green Island, to the artificial reef to Peel Island, around Peel and then back to Ormiston – that’s the triangle they have been seen in, and they are worth finding; they are magnificent creatures.

Till next month, good fishing, and enjoy the bay and a fresh fish for dinner!
