FROM DENTAL ON CAMBRIDGE
What are dental implants? Dental implants are a long-lasting, cost-effective way to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth and restore aesthetics and chewing function.
This modern approach to replacing missing teeth utilises a titanium fixture, which functions as an artificial tooth root to which a strong dental crown is attached, restoring the function of a tooth or multiple teeth. In most cases, the titanium fixture is placed under local anaesthetic into the jaw bone in a painless in-chair dental procedure. It is placed where the roots of your missing tooth would have been. Over approximately three months, the bone heals around the implant, and it is accepted by the body.
A dental implant can replace a single missing tooth, and multiple dental implants can replace multiple missing teeth or even a whole arch of missing teeth. At Dental on Cambridge, we have three highly skilled dentists who are highly trained and experienced in placing dental implants, utilising state-of-the-art digital dental technology to ensure successful patient treatment outcomes.
What’s involved in the implant procedure? Implant procedures usually consist of approximately five appointments across a three-month period. Initially, a 3D scan is taken of the existing situation and areas where the implant/s will be placed. Additionally, a 3D image of the patient’s jaw bone is obtained via a mini dental CT scan (Cone-beam volumetric computed tomography). These essential 3D images ensure the safe and accurate placement of the implant into the jaw. After this planning stage, the implant surgery takes place onsite at our practice in a completely sterile environment. This appointment usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes for a single implant. A week later, we check the implant site and then we let the body work its healing magic for three months. After three months, we perform a test to ensure the implant has been accepted by the body, and then we place teeth on the implant/s.
Am I a suitable candidate for a dental implant? If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental implant might be an option to consider. We always recommend a consultation to discuss your options with our experienced dentists, as not everyone will be able to have a dental implant. Our dentists will check your jawbone is healthy and has enough bone to hold the implant; they will review any medical conditions and medications you are taking to consider all risk factors and will review your general oral hygiene and gum health, amongst other things.
What are the benefits and risks of a dental implant? Our experienced dentists will ensure your personal risk factors are explained to you when discussing your treatment options. As each person is different, different risks should be discussed. The benefits, however, are universal and include an aesthetic appearance, increased confidence, and an improved ability to eat normally; essentially, it looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.
So what’s the investment? A simple start-to-finish single implant, including the final crown, is $4700. Keep in mind that this amount is paid over a three to six-month period. This is also before any health fund rebates are applied. At Dental on Cambridge, we strive to make dental care affordable for our patients, and we offer staggered payments where possible, payment plans and provide onsite quotes through all health funds to support informed decision making.
