The whiting should now have moved throughout the Small Boat Channel, Rous Channel, Amity Banks, the Sand Hills and the Blue Hole, so there’s no excuse not to get a good feed for most families. My favourite baits to use are bloodworms, beach worms, peeled small prawns and strips of squid. The easiest rig to use is a paternoster, and my top tip is to fish for whiting when there’s a good run in the tide.
School mackerel will be in the bay in good numbers, especially around the Small Boat Channel towards the Rous entrance, and there will be lots of undersized ones…but some really nice fish will be amongst them, and September should be a cracker of a month for mackerel fishing. Floating pillies or diving boards with spoons will work best to catch them.
The squid and cuttlefish taper off a little in September, but they will still be in good numbers, and will have even moved into the weed banks. I find the dull-coloured jigs work best on cloudy days and the bright colours on the sunny days. September is also a great sand crab month!
The snapper season restarted in August, so there will be plenty of choices when you’re deciding what fish to put on the table over the next month or so.
