October is a great month to be out on Moreton Bay, not just because the fishing’s good, but because there are also whales about. These majestic creatures bring their newborn calves in for a little rest, and we get to enjoy the magic.
I will be posting regularly on my Facebook page with sightings and reports on where the whales have been spotted in the bay.
On the fishing front, the school mackerel will be in full swing before the ‘spotties’ (hopefully) come into the bay, and because spring was so hot, we have a good chance of seeing them.
The whiting have been in great numbers on the eastern side of the Blue Hole, Fisherman’s, Reeders Point and Amity Banks, but at this time of the year, they should move into the Rous and Chain Banks. There will still be good fishing around Darcy Light and the banks towards the Port as well.
Crabs are in good numbers, and the snapper and sweet lip are around all the shallow island reefs, and of course around the artificial reefs. I think the cuttlefish will have died off with all this heat, so fishing in the shallow weed banks for tigers will be the way to go.
On a personal note, Martha and I have moved from our home of 50 years on Preston Road at Manly West to Aveo Gardens retirement village, and what a great place for us older folks. It is so friendly; thanks to the staff and neighbours for welcoming us…and fresh fish will be on the menu!
