We asked local artist Garry Dolan about what an artist’s life looks like and the path he took to becoming a professional creative.

“Having started oil painting at the age of 13, I decided to concentrate on art approximately 20 years ago and am an established professional artist with artwork in many permanent collections around the world.

“I took up art for my sanity, but it has become one of life’s greatest gifts imaginable. Through art, I have travelled the world, painted in over 30 countries and all corners of Australia and New Zealand, I have met many incredible people from Prime Ministers to sporting champions to world famous entertainers to war veterans, and have been privileged to get to know them and tell their story.

“As an artist, I see myself as a storyteller. I thrive on traveling, discovering new places, and connecting with the people I encounter. Rather than aiming for detailed records or analyses, my art seeks to capture the feelings a place or person evokes in me. If someone looking at my art feels a little of what I felt when I was painting, then I have successfully told that story.

“Living life as an artist is a great privilege and an incredibly rewarding gift. An artist sees the world with an intensity and focus that ensures we live life to its fullest.

“My artwork has been displayed across Australia and the world at sites such as the Pentagon, the Australian War Memorial, the MotoGP, international ballet performances, the Queensland State Library, the Army Aviation Museum, the Queensland Parliament, the Queensland Maritime Museum, The Gallipoli Club, and in sites related to Australia’s involvement in the Western Front in France, including the Musee Jean et Denise Letaille – Bullecourt 1917, the Brisbane Motor Museum, as well as in private collections within Australia and overseas.
