Textures in Nature is the August exhibition at the Old SchoolHouse Gallery. Members Kathy Delaney and Kate Stimson are joined by their guest Stephen Schumacher – all interpreting textures in nature through their own creative mediums.
Kathy Delaney, through her medium of oils, paints the textures of the sea, rocks and foliage revealing both the soft edges and harsh surfaces that we see in the environment around us. Her 3D cards and hand-painted coaster sets also reflect these textures. Kathy uses both brush and palette knife painting to interpret her impressions of what she discovers in nature.
Kate Stimson says she has always been a creative soul. “My artistic practice is a celebration of life – a love letter to the magical wonders around us and to the creative spirit that resides within us all,” she says. “I enjoy playing with the subtleties of colours that complement one another then adding layers of finer details with patterns and textures, creating a sensory experience. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to explore their own journeys, to find solace in the beauty of the world, and to embrace that transformative power of creativity.”
Stephen Schumacher was a primary school teacher for 40-odd years with an interest in sport. However while he was growing up whenever he saw someone demonstrating woodturning, he was completely mesmerized by the process. “I began my turning journey 19 years ago at the Bayside Woodturners and Woodcrafters Club at Manly. Here I was taught by another ex-school teacher but also a wonderful turner who instilled in me the maxim ‘We are making a thing of Beauty’. From there I have become heavily involved in the world of woodcraft, especially woodturning. It is my therapy, my hobby, and a great joy in my life.”
Old SchoolHouse Gallery would also like to thank Redland City Council for our new flags – made possible through the Small Grants Program. They look amazing!
Textures in Nature is on display throughout August at the gallery, located at Shore Street North, Cleveland, which is open Thursdays to Sundays and on public holidays.
