FROM CLEVELAND DISTRICT STATE HIGH SCHOOL

After a busy semester 1, the Creative Arts department at Cleveland District SHS is gearing up for another whirlwind of creative events in semester 2, and we welcome our community to join us for these events.

We kick off the semester with 37 of our students joining 1500 students from around Queensland to perform at the Convention Centre, South Bank, in July at the annual performance of Creative Generation: State Schools on Stage. It is the 20th anniversary of this performance extravaganza, and the show will be broadcast on Channel 9 later in the year.

In August, our Year 12 Music Extension students are presenting their final performances for the year. This is always a fabulous night of music, with a performance repertoire that ranges from contemporary and classical music to jazz and music theatre. This free event is held on the evening of Friday, August 9, at Cleveland DSHS.

For those who enjoy visual and performing arts, we welcome visitors to campus for our FAMED exhibition on Monday, September 9, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. This free event showcases fantastic work from our Film, Art, Media, and Drama students.

In October, on Thursday 17 we are proud to present our annual Dance Fusion, which is a vibrant evening showcasing the colour and energy of our three dance teams and talented elective dance students. This is followed on Friday October 18 by our Music Showcase, featuring our instrumental and choral ensembles – these ensembles are well worth hearing, having just scooped up a heap of Gold and Platinum awards at the recent State Fanfare competition! Both of these shows are held on campus at the Paul Bancroft Centre and are highlights of our school calendar. Tickets will be available through Trybooking links in August.

Our final performance event of the year is our annual Jazz Under the Stars – a relaxed evening of jazz and popular music performed by our Instrumental Music students. This free concert on Sunday, November 3, is held at our outdoor amphitheatre from 5:00pm to 8:30pm; BYO chair and picnic blanket and settle back for an enjoyable evening of smooth musical grooves.

We hope to welcome members of our local community to these events. Please contact our Head of Department, Simon Watson, for more information about the Creative Arts events at Cleveland District SHS, or email [email protected].
