Strengthening Australia’s Defence
I recently organised the Bonner-Bowman Defence Forum, where we gathered at the Manly Lota RSL to discuss the vital issues surrounding Australia’s defence strategy and the security of our nation. It was an insightful discussion with Shadow Minister for Defence the Honourable Andrew Hastie MP and Member for Bowman, Henry Pike MP, on Australia’s defence strategy and the security of our nation.
On top of needing cheaper groceries, affordable rent and lower bills, Australians expect to feel safe, in their homes, communities and as a nation. Sadly, one of the most pressing issues discussed was the growing challenge of recruitment within Australia’s defence forces. Australia is a strong and mighty country; we have bright minds and plentiful natural resources. We are a hopeful, fierce and ready people, so it is incredibly disappointing to see defence recruiting in such a poor state.
Our strategic environment is the most challenging and complex it has been since the Second World War, and we desperately need to fix the recruiting, retention, and readiness crisis’ in our defence force.
We need a message that appeals to young hearts and minds, reminding the next generation of the timeless values of service, duty, honour and country. As the Shadow Defence Minister Says, “A strong and capable sovereign defence industry means a stronger and more capable Defence Force, and, therefore, a stronger and more capable Australia.”
Travelling across the country from Western Australia to the Manly Lota RSL, it was wonderful to hear from a leader as experienced, educated and decisive as the Honourable Andrew Hastie MP.
Tackling the Future: What’s Next for Rugby LEAGUE in Wynnum
Community sport is vital in fostering social connections, promoting physical and mental wellbeing, and strengthening local communities. It provides people of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to stay active, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and build friendships. I recently met with Wayne Weekes from our local Wynnum Manly Seagulls for an update on their players and facilities.
Infrastructure and growth are a key focus at the club. By leveraging his thirty years of experience in the League, most recently nine years at the Broncos, Wayne has transformed the club, pushing to bring back its legacy and expand opportunities for future players.
Wayne has established an ‘Old Goals’ club, to foster community amongst all past players. Since launching halfway through last year, the ‘Old Goals’ has surged to 300 members, a testament to its commitment to the Bayside community and grassroots rugby league.
He has also taken practical steps to foster female participation in the game. He has mirrored the men’s teams for women (including establishing a local Brisbane Rugby League (BRL) A-grade team).
Community involvement is another pillar of the ’Gulls. Through partnerships with local schools, junior clubs, and charities, they foster a positive culture from the ground up.
The ’Gulls are also dedicated to looking after their players, on and off the field, through health and wellness initiatives. Their approach includes expert-led strength and conditioning programs, mental health support, and injury prevention initiatives. By focusing on player welfare, they ensure athletes develop both physically and mentally in a supportive environment.
Clubs like the Seagulls provide people of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to stay active, feel a sense of belonging and inclusivity and contribute to the local economy. Additionally, community sports programs can play a crucial role in youth development, keeping young people engaged in positive activities and teaching valuable life skills. By encouraging participation and collaboration, team sports ultimately help create healthier, more connected and resilient communities.
Community Comes First
Our Bayside community spirit has been on full display over the past few weeks as local volunteers and organisers have brought together a series of successful events to life. From sports tournaments and charity fundraisers to cultural festivals and family fun days, these gatherings have strengthened community ties and provided joy to residents of all ages.
I was able to stop by the Bayside Community Legal Services’ “Coffee With A Lawyer”, which provided locals with an opportunity to meet with the team at BCLS and have a yarn over coffee and cake.
I also visited the Wynnum Retirement Living & Senior Lifestyle Expo. The event was complete with a variety of service experts, deals, refreshments and luck door prizes.
Behind every well-run event are the dedicated individuals who devote their time and energy to planning, coordinating, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Whether it’s securing venues, managing logistics, or simply lending a helping hand, these organisers play a crucial role in making these events possible. Their commitment reflects the values of generosity, teamwork, and service that make our local community so special.
On behalf of the entire community, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who give their time to serve others in this way.
