For one colourful weekend, North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) won’t just be a beach paradise – it will become one giant creative playground.
From open studios and beachside pop-ups to live art, photography, music, design, workshops and unexpected creative spaces, this year’s Straddie Arts Trail invites locals and visitors to discover the island through the eyes of its artists.
Held across three big days from August 14 to 16, the trail encompasses the townships of Dunwich (Goompi), Amity Point (Pulan Pulan), and Point Lookout (Mooloomba), and will feature more than 65 artists across 35 stops, promising an immersive celebration of creativity, community and the laidback spirit that makes Straddie unlike anywhere else.
For resident artist, writer and filmmaker Trish Lake, the arts trail is one of her favourite events of the year, and one that changed her life.
After attending previous arts trails as a visitor, Trish exhibited for the first time last year, taking the leap from hobby artist to professional creative.
“Like other artists, I have spent a lifetime making art, but never considered it being more than just a hobby until I became involved with the Straddie Arts Trail,” she said.
“That was the trigger for me to cross the line and move from hobby artist to someone who could put together a body of work and sell some paintings.
“I was so shocked when I sold a painting on the first day, and close to 20 over the course of the weekend.
“If it hadn’t been for the Straddie Arts Trail, I doubt I would have taken that extra leap. I can honestly say it has changed my life.”
This year, Trish returns to the trail with renewed confidence, exhibiting her watercolours, pastels and acrylics at Stop 11 as part of the exhibition Sojourns and Seascapes, where she will be joined by four other creatives whose careers span filmmaking, writing, illustration, media, environmental advocacy and education.
Other highlights of the trail include artworks at the QUAMPI, Quandamooka Arts and Cultural Centre, a film night at Straddie Brewing Co, exploring the island’s rich history, culture and creativity at the North Stradbroke Island Museum, plus more.
“The island is home to many incredible and inspiring artists, so make sure you come on over and immerse yourself in the beauty and creativity of Straddie.”
