BY JULIE DIXON (WATERLOO BAY LEISURE CENTRE)

Immediate past president of Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre (WBLC), Beverley (Bev) Weeks, passed away on April 3 after a brief battle with cancer. She fought bravely until the end in her usual indomitable way.

Bev served the WBLC for over 40 years, joining as an associate member because she was not old enough (being under 50) to be a full member. Apparently, as an Associate, the rule was that you had to volunteer with Meals on Wheels to be allowed to join. Over all these years, she has worked in all areas of the Centre, was a canteen convenor, and served as secretary, vice president, and president until she retired three years ago to look after her ailing husband, Wally.

She was also heavily involved with the Bayside Woodturners (The Woodies) and the local soccer club in her younger years.

Bev was greatly respected and admired by all who knew this beautiful lady. She was kind and generous, calm in the face of a raging storm, and a fount of wisdom and advice. She was a shoulder to lean on when things got tough, and the management committee of WBLC, in particular, will miss her greatly.

We were pleased to be able to honour Bev with a beautiful memorial at the Centre. Well over 100 people attended, a testament to her position of respect in the community. On display were many of the awards she had been presented with over the years, along with some of her beautiful art and craft work. She was a very talented lady.

Our sincerest condolences to Wally and their sons, Matthew and Paul, and their families.
