Bayside Shelter Inc. in Wynnum will be able to continue supporting people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity thanks to a new community grant announced this week.
The local organisation is one of 12 community groups – including six from the bayside – receiving grant funding from the Port of Brisbane to help deliver projects that strengthen local communities.
For Bayside Shelter Inc., who provides female-only crisis accommodation in Wynnum, the funding will support its ongoing work assisting women transitioning into private rental properties following homelessness or domestic violence, while bringing other important support services for its clients.
Carly Ogborne, Bayside Shelter Inc. President said, “Bayside Shelter was started by locals, for locals, because we saw a huge gap in crisis support for women in our area”.
“This kind of support, from a local champion like the Port of Brisbane, means we can provide better support to ensure women break the cycle of housing insecurity for good.”
Other successful grant recipients are delivering initiatives focused on mental health, young people, environmental stewardship and cultural awareness.
The funding is being provided through the Port’s Community Grants Program, which has supported local and regional community organisations since 2013.
Port of Brisbane Community Relations Manager Edward Harwood said the grants were designed to help grassroots organisations continue delivering important services close to home.
“Community organisations like Bayside Shelter Inc. make incredible differences in the lives of people every day,” Mr Harwood said.
“They understand their communities, know where support is needed and work tirelessly to help people overcome challenges and build stronger futures.
“We’re proud to play a small role in supporting that work through our Community Grants Program.”
More than $1.4 million has been distributed through the Port’s program since it was established, supporting organisations that are helping build stronger, more connected and resilient communities across the region.
