Volunteers from the Cancer Council Queensland Redlands Branch will be painting the town yellow this month as they rally community support for one of the organisation’s most recognised fundraising campaigns – Daffodil Day.
Held annually in August, Daffodil Day raises funds for life-saving cancer research plus vital services for the more than 33,000 Queenslanders diagnosed each year.
According to Cancer Council Queensland, one in two people will receive a cancer diagnosis by the age of 85.
Redlands Branch volunteer Jill Watson is encouraging residents to dig deep and support the appeal, saying every dollar makes a huge difference.
“Our volunteers will once again be at Alexandra Hills Shopping Centre, Birkdale Fair Shopping Centre, Capalaba Park Shopping Centre and Victoria Point Shopping Centre on August 20 and 21 from 8:30am to 3:30pm, so please pop down and say ‘hello’,” she said.
“We’ll be selling big beautiful bunches of daffodils, along with merchandise including teddy bears, magnets, pens and keyrings.
“We’ll also have our homemade daffodil cookies available again after they proved so popular last year.”
The Redlands community has a strong track record of supporting the campaign, with volunteers raising $15,000 during last year’s appeal.
“All money raised will go towards cancer research aimed at improving treatments and finding a cure, as well as funding accommodation centres for people travelling from regional areas for treatment, free transport to medical appointments, counselling services through the Cancer Council helpline, and the organisation’s wig service,” she said.
“We were thrilled with the support we received in 2025 and we’re hoping the community will get behind us once again this year to match or even beat that figure.
“People should also keep an eye out for additional pop-up stalls at local businesses and coffee shops that we might do throughout the month.”
