Party dresses are made of stiff taffeta, lipstick is iridescent, women are crimping and perming their hair, David Bowie is everybody’s darling, and the dancing is dirty – can you identify the decade?
Of course it’s the 1980s, brought back to life on the RPAC stage in all its iridescent, excessive glory by acclaimed cabaret performer Melissa Western and her three-woman cohort; a cabaret female foursome sandwiched between caring for children and caring for parents, holding down jobs and holding up friends, who cling to precious memories of their teen years.
“It’s one hundred per cent nostalgia for me,” says Melissa, “that zeitgeist of iconic 1980s movies – you just have to say the title of the show for people around my age to get what it means!”
Melissa, well-known for her solo cabaret work, says a foursome is appropriate for this show, which has already won two coveted Matilda awards.
“I really wanted to create this show as a ‘club’ that keeps us connected to our peers; the notion of a group is really important and it was the best fun to do the creative development for.”
“There’s been a lot of post-show parties and nostalgia, for the cast and for the audiences who just want to stay and talk about their eighties experiences – it makes people feel so connected to each other.”
And it’s fun, whether you remember the ’80s or you just want to find out what they were about.
Dirty Fame Flash Candles Club will play RPAC on September 6. For more information and bookings, visit rpac.com.au.
