Collectors hoping to uncover their next rare find, find out whether an old family collection is worth keeping, or simply looking for a new hobby, will have the chance to do all three when Queensland’s biggest stamp and coin show opens in August.
Presented by the Queensland Philatelic Council, the event will be held at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Chandler from Thursday, August 13 to Sunday, August 16, bringing together more than 35 specialist dealers, 450 exhibition displays and thousands of collectables from across Australia and overseas.
Visitors will be able to buy, sell and trade stamps, coins, banknotes, postcards, trading cards, Postal Numismatic Covers, ephemera and other collectables, with experts also on hand to provide free valuations, workshops and presentations.
Organiser Simone Sequeira said the show was a great way for people to learn more about this niche hobby.
“Many people come along because they’ve inherited a stamp or coin collection and want to know what they have, whether it’s worth keeping or where to go next,” she said.
“But what often surprises them is the community. They meet other collectors, learn about different areas of the hobby and sometimes leave inspired to start collecting themselves.
“I also see lots of families come with their kids and grandkids because collecting is something fun and exciting they can do together.”
For seasoned collectors, the biggest draw is the search itself.
“The excitement is in the rummage,” Simone said.
“It’s looking through boxes and albums, hoping to uncover something special or finding that one stamp or coin you’ve been searching for.”
Australia Post will also unveil a series of exclusive show-only collectables, including one limited-edition numbered Postal Numismatic Cover released each day. These include the 60th anniversary Decimal Currency, Aussie Big Things two 2-Coin, and a special Lest We Forget tribute, with only 150 available daily.
Collectors will also have the chance to purchase exclusive koala-themed minisheets available only during the show.
Head on down anytime between 12:00pm and 6:00pm on Thursday August 13, 10:00am and 6:00pm on Friday and Saturday, and 9:00am and 2:00pm on Sunday August 16.
Entry is $4 if you pre-purchase online, or $5 at the door, with free admission for kids under 16.
