STATE MEMBER FOR LYTTON

Queensland Day

Queensland Day marks the anniversary of our official separation from New South Wales and is celebrated every year on 6 June. What do you love about our state? Is it the people, the laidback, sun-drenched lifestyle, or a particular place? Whatever it is, I ask you to take a photo and post it to my Facebook page or email it to [email protected].

Throughout June, I will be displaying these images in the window of my office. To get the ball rolling, I’ve included a photo of one of my favourite places in the world – the Wynnum Manly waterfront.

Bayside DV Candlelight Vigil

I would like to thank everyone who attended the DV Candlelight Vigil last month. It was incredibly touching to see the community come out in support of domestic and family violence (DFV) survivors. I was pleased to see so many school students. It’s so important to start changing attitudes towards violence while children are young.

Thank you also to the survivors who so bravely shared their stories, and to Kirsty from the MATE Bystander program who spoke about the Be There app, a free, interactive tool that guides family and friends if they suspect someone they love is living with DFV.

Bayside Business of the Month

Our Bayside Business of the Month for May is Bayside Admin & Bookkeeping. Lauren has been providing admin and bookkeeping services for many years now and has now diversified to include valuable NDIS services to her portfolio. She’s also been involved with community organisations like Bayside Women in Business Inc.

Congratulations Lauren!

If you know a great Bayside business that deserves a shout-out, please get in touch! Submit your pick by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 3915 1100. Please provide the businesses name, contact details and a sentence or two describing what they do.

Grants Available Now

There are several Queensland Government grants available now for community groups and businesses.

The next round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will allow flood affect community groups to apply for up to $100 000. Groups that have not been affected by natural disasters may still apply for funding up to the standard limit of $35 000. The Disaster Recovery round will open on 16 May and close on 15 July 2022.

The Community Social Enterprise Development Grants offers funding opportunities between $5000 – $25 000 for projects that support new social enterprises. The grant opens 3 June and closes 15 July.

The Community Road Safety Grant is open now and closes 10 June. Not-for-profit organisations can apply for funding to deliver road safety initiatives.

My annual grants forum will take place in August of this year. Watch this space for more information!

Events funding

Here’s some good news for arts and culture fans in the Bayside – two events have been awarded funding under round 21 of the Queensland Destination Events Program.

Wynnum Fringe Festival will receive $20 000 in funding, while
Rock the Bay will receive $17 000. Not only will this funding
provide incredible cultural experiences for local residents; it
will also help to attract more visitors to our beautiful Bayside.

Congratulations to Tom Oliver and his team.

Ride n Ride

Are you a commuter who rides a bike? Then have you heard about the great new bike enclosure at Manly Station?

The enclosure has space for up to 40 bikes and 24/7 security cameras for customer and bicycle safety. It’s also constructed out of steel mesh, to allow for better surveillance.

Customers can book a space by registering online by scanning the QR code below and paying a $50 deposit, and collecting a key from the station. It’s a great system and very easy to use.
