If you don’t vote, you may receive a fine. If you are aged 16 or 17, you can provisionally enrol and this means you can vote as soon as you turn 18. Once you have enrolled, your name and address will be added to the electoral roll.

SPORTS CLUBS RECOVERY GRANTS

Funding is now available for eligible sport and recreational organisations impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Applications for grants have now opened. To apply go www.qld.gov.au/recreation/sports/funding/disaster-recovery. A grant of up to $5000 is available for eligible items. To be eligible, organisations must be an incorporated not-for-profit organisation with a primary objective relating to the delivery of local sport and active recreation, demonstrate tenure over the infrastructure and have the legal right to conduct works on the site to request repair damaged infrastructure.

HEALTH BOOST WELCOME

Good news for local health services. The Federal Government has made the single largest investment in Medicare since its creation, with $8.5 billion to deliver an additional 18 million bulk billed GP visits each year, hundreds of nursing scholarships, and thousands more doctors in the largest GP training program ever. Australian patients and families will save hundreds of dollars a year in out-of-pocket costs, with patient savings of $859 million a year by 2030. It will mean 9 out of 10 GP visits will be bulk billed by 2030, boosting the number of fully bulk billed practices to around 4,800 nationally – triple the current number.

BABI YOUTH FESTIVAL

Every year, BABI youth organise the Baywave Youth Festival, during Youth Week. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, April 8th from 11am to 4:00pm at the Ed Devenport Rotary Park at Bowering St, Lota. The Baywave Youth Festival is an important day dedicated to young people in the Bayside area. The Festival includes a basketball workshop, a skating demonstration, and other exciting activities, all designed to foster community connections and provide a fun, positive experience for young people.

WATERLOO BAY SAINTS FEED NEEDY

Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre has started providing free meals to vulnerable Baysiders in need. Meals are provided every Wednesday from 4pm to 5pm. With the continued closure of Wynnum Community Place due to the Queensland Government not making funding available (despite promises to do so), there is a clear need to support and feed Baysiders in need. I congratulate the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre for stepping up to fill this void. I’m very proud to help sponsor this worthwhile initiative. Likewise, if any local organisations, supermarkets, food outlets or restaurants can donate food to the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre, all help is welcome.

SUPPORT FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Small businesses need immediate financial support in the wake of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. To date (at the time of publication), the Queensland Government has not offered any direct financial assistance to small businesses in South East Queensland (SEQ) impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Some local small businesses, particularly in hospitality, lost tens of thousands of dollars as a result of the cyclone. The Queensland Government must step up and provide real financial support.

If your small business has been impacted, please sign the petition by visiting https://bit.ly/3DKOk0Z.
