STATE MEMBER FOR LYTTON
BAYSIDERS AMONGST KING’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS
Congratulations to all recipients of King’s Birthday Honours.
Among Baysiders to be recognised is Aunty Becky Thomson, a revered Quandamooka Elder and Chair of WINNAM. Aunty Becky was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). I was honoured to nominate Aunty Becky for this high honour in recognition of important work that she’s done over many years for our Indigenous and wider community.
Bayside local Dr Toni Hains was honoured in recognition for her service to nursing, as was former Wynnum Manly Seagulls Player, Gene Miles, who was recognised for his service to youth and rugby league.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT FUND SUPER ROUND NOW OPEN
The Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) is Queensland’s largest one-off community grants program and distributes approximately $60 million each year to not-for-profit community groups. The GCBF funding helps these groups to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities.
The GCBF will have 2 more funding rounds in 2025: Round 124 – $100,000 super round – closes 18 July and Round 125 – $35,000 standard grant round – closes 31 October. To check eligibility requirements and understand your organisation’s responsibilities throughout all stages of the grant funding process, go to www.justice.qld.gov.au/initiatives/community-grants.
Contact the GCBF team on 1800 633 619 for assistance.
LAWS PASSED TO INCREASE TOLLS
The Queensland Government recently passed sneaky laws to make it easier to toll roads like the Story Bridge and Gateway. These laws quietly pave the way for tolls to be declared on Queensland roads with less scrutiny and less transparency. These laws mean they can slap a toll on any road, or hike up an existing road toll without fear, favour or proper consultation.
Under these laws, councils gain the power to declare tolls in stages. That opens the door for Brisbane City Council to toll, for example, the Story Bridge. We know the Story Bridge is in disrepair. It’s just a sneaky deal between Brisbane City Council and the Crisafulli Government to put in road tolls. We’ll fight it if they try it.
CONGRATULATIONS TO BAYSIDE’S BEST VOLUNTEERS
I recently hosted The Best of the Bayside Volunteer Awards at Wynnum RSL. I wish to acknowledge all recipients of these volunteer awards.
Volunteers across our Bayside are the heart of our community. Their selfless contributions, whether in local events, feeding the vulnerable, on our school P&C committees, or sporting clubs, help build stronger, kinder neighbourhoods. They give their time, skills and compassion without expecting anything in return.
We thank and celebrate all volunteers for making our Bayside a better place.

THANK YOU CELEBRATE FOR A CAUSE
Sadly, Celebrate for a Cause is being formally wound up. I want to thank the leadership of this wonderful organisation for their hard work in support of our Bayside community over the last 7 years.
Celebrate for a Cause raised over $300,000 for local and charitable groups and supported countless lives through their fundraising efforts. Among those to benefit include The Black Dog Institute,
BABI Youth & Family, The Forgotten Women, Rosies, Challenge DV, and the Bayside Community Fund.
To everyone who volunteered, attended events, sponsored, or donated to Celebrate for a Cause, thank you. You have helped make a difference.
