Joan Pease’s community update - The Community Leader and Real Estate New and Views

STATE MEMBER FOR LYTTON

Well, here we are in February! Now is a good time to remind the local community of the services, resources, and support I can assist the community with.

I provide free black and white photocopying for community groups. If you have an event flyer, newsletter or other communications that need copying, please come into my office and talk to my staff. Please note – we might not be able to complete your copying immediately so be sure to come as early as possible to ensure you receive what you need on time.

If you’re planning an event, I can provide gazebos, folding tables, and eskies. To book those in, please email [email protected] with the dates you will need those available. I can also assist with promotions by sharing your event flyer on Facebook and hanging it in the window of my office.

For businesses and group leaders, I can provide COVID-19 resources including mandate posters and COVID safety plan templates.

And if you know someone in our electorate with a special anniversary or birthday coming up, we can help you organise a special congratulatory letter.

90th birthday letters can be requested from the Prime Minister of Australia and Premier of Queensland, while 50th (Golden anniversary) letters can be requested from the Prime Minister, Premier of Queensland and Governor of Queensland.

100th, 105th and 110th birthday letters can be arranged from Her Majesty The Queen, Governor-General of Australia, Prime Minister of Australia, Governor of Queensland, and Premier of Queensland, as well as 60th, 65th, 70th (Diamond) anniversary letters.

If you would like to arrange a letter, please provide a birth certificate or marriage certificate to my office and allow for up to 4 weeks for the letter to arrive.

Also, whether you are a local resident, community group, or business, if you provide your email address, I will keep you up to date with grants and other opportunities through my monthly newsletter.

Vaccinations Update

Congratulations Wynnum Manly – as of mid-January, we have surpassed 90% vaccination of the over 15 population! Thank you to all of you who rolled up your sleeves and got your two jabs.

Don’t forget your booster! If you are over 18 and received your last vaccination three months ago or more, you’re eligible for a booster shot. For more information about vaccinations, including where to get a booster or dose, please visit the QLD Health website – https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/protect-yourself-others/covid-19-vaccine/rollout.

The Queensland Government extended the return to school date to give students an opportunity to vaccinate in time for the commencement of the school year. To make your experience as easy as possible, please note that bookings are recommended for children aged 5-11 as walk-in capacity is limited. It’s great to see so many parents getting their kids vaccinated!

Not all vaccination locations are able to vaccinate children. Visit the QLD Government website here for more information about locations – https://www.qld.gov.au/…/cov…/book/vaccination-locations.

Make Volunteering your New Year’s Resolution

There are so many benefits for volunteering, for both yourself and the greater community. Volunteering strengthens communities and improves connections and volunteers often experience increased self-confidence and mental health. You may even pick up professional experience that will help you in your career.

Getting Started
Rotary Clubs exist to provide resources and support to local groups. They are a good start for new volunteers, as they serve a range of functions. In Lytton, we have two Rotary Clubs, Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly ([email protected]) and Port of Brisbane Rotary ([email protected]).

Older residents might like to enquire with senior’s organisations like National Seniors Wynnum ([email protected]) or assist with functions and events at the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre ([email protected]).

And if your area of interest lies with social welfare, Rosies Friends on the Street are looking for people to spare four hours a month with their outreach teams. Visit rosies.org.au to fill out an application.

Business of the Month

When it came to picking a business of the month for January, Brad Herdegen was a shoe-in.

The proprietor of the Shoe Hospital on Florence Street has poured his heart and sole into repairing shoes, belts and other leather goods for more than a decade.

Congratulations Brad – and please forgive my tongue-in-cheek puns.
