SEPTEMBER IS PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, an important reminder for men to know their risk and talk to their GP. Prostate cancer is one of Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancers, with around 29,000 men diagnosed each year and almost 4,000 deaths. It’s not just an older man’s disease – diagnosis rates among men aged 40-49 have increased by more than 150% since 2000, and around 1,400 Australian men under 55 are diagnosed each year. Early detection matters, so know your risk and talk to your GP. More information: www.pcfa.org.au
VALE DR BRONWYN HERBERT OAM
Our community is deeply saddened at the passing of Dr Bronwyn Herbert OAM.
A lifelong Wynnum local, Bronwyn dedicated her working life to social work and youth welfare. Her research and advocacy helped deepen our understanding of homelessness and, importantly, how we can break the cycle. Bronwyn also gave so much to our Bayside through Silky Oaks Children’s Haven, Bayside Family Day Care, Moreton Bay College and St Peter’s Anglican Church.
She received fitting recognition for a lifetime spent helping others, receiving OAM Honours and being named Queensland Senior Australian of the Year. Bronwyn’s passing is a great loss to our Bayside community. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the community she served
so generously.
WE MUST DO MORE TO PROTECT WOMEN
Tragically, four Queensland women have reportedly lost their lives to domestic violence in just 45 days – a devastating reminder that we must do more. At the same time, the State Government has cut almost $40 million from domestic and family violence prevention funding in this year’s Budget.
Every woman and child deserves to feel safe in their home. We need prevention, early intervention and properly resourced support services. Tackling domestic and family violence must remain an absolute priority.
WYNNUM MANLY LEAGUES CLUB COMMUNITY GRANTS
It was wonderful to join the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club for its 2026 Community Grants Presentation Night and celebrate the local organisations that do so much for our Bayside. Since 1997, the Club has contributed almost $25 million to local schools, sporting clubs, community groups and charities.
Congratulations to this year’s recipients, including Bayside Shelter, Wynnum Croquet Club, Darling Point Special School, Moreton Bay Girl Guides, Manly State School, Pandanus Outrigger Canoe Club, Silky Oaks, Tingalpa Kindergarten and State School, Wynnum Commnity Place, just to name a few.
A huge thanks to the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club for continuing to invest in our community.
EMSWORTH ST PUBLIC HOUSING OFFICIALLY OPENS
I’m so proud to see the 50 new social housing homes on Emsworth Street in Wynnum, officially opened. The project was initiated and fast-tracked by the former Queensland Labor Government.
This six-storey development, delivered by Bric Housing and built by the team at Niclin, will provide safe, modern one-and two-bedroom homes for people who need them most. It’s close to public transport, shops, health services and everything people need to stay connected.
I understand that solving the housing crisis requires every type of housing – private, affordable and social. We need homes across the entire housing spectrum. I’m proud that the former Queensland Labor Government backed this initiative because everyone deserves the security of a safe place to call home. Projects like this make our Bayside community stronger, more inclusive and give people the opportunity to live their lives with dignity.
