FROM WYNNUM BUGS
In 2024, Wynnum Bugs Rugby held its inaugural girls rugby program. This was a 10-week program to provide girls aged 10 to 18 an opportunity to experience Rugby 7’s in a safe and friendly environment. Rugby 7’s is an Olympic Sport at which Australia excels.
There were 28 girls who participated in the program, which was so successful that the club entered three teams into the BJRU Girls 7’s series, combining with Redlands Rugby to ensure there were enough players in each age group.
All three teams did themselves proud, and the skills they had learnt were shown on the fields, with many other well-regarded clubs commenting on their abilities.
On 7 February 2025, the club will be commencing a new 10-week program for just $40, where qualified coaches will help the girls learn the skills and laws of the game, and for those with previous experience to work on developing their skills.
The goal is to increase the number of girls who participate in rugby and develop enough girls to enter teams into the BJRU 7’s series later in the year.
