We are excited to announce that the Seagulls have found a new head coach for our QLD Cup side from 2023. Mathew Head, currently St. George Illawarra Dragons NRL Assistant Coach, will make the move to Wynnum for the next two seasons.

The 40-year-old will join the Seagulls from the St George Illawarra Dragons where he has been the NRL assistant coach to Anthony Griffin over the past two seasons.

Head is a former NRL halfback, where he played 67 games for the Dragons from 2003-09, as well as a season each for Wests Tigers and Hull FC in Super League.

After retiring from playing, Head began his coaching career with the Dapto Canaries and then supported the Cronulla Sharks and Dragons as a specialist kicking coach.

He then coached the Balmain Tigers SG Ball (Under 18) team to state and national titles, before returning to the Dragons where he progressed from NYC Under 20s head coach, to NSW Cup head coach and eventually NRL Assistant Coach.

Interim CEO Tom Solah said that Head’s NRL pedigree and extensive experience in pathways were the perfect fit for Wynnum Manly.

Head said he’s very excited to take up the top position at a historic club in rugby league.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Seagulls and it’s a privilege to be leading a proud club with all its history. I am very grateful for how Adam has left the club in a strong position, and I can’t wait to get started.”
