FROM THE REDCITY ROAR

Women’s team, sponsored by Hog’s Breath Café, Cleveland.

RedCity Roar women have enjoyed an injection of experience and energy in recent weeks with the arrival of Donica Cosby and Angela Beadle.

We recently hosted the visiting Cairns Dolphins with talented players Shanice Swain (WNBA draftee) and Teyahna Bond having a great season so far.

Our Roar women burst out of the blocks playing some excellent two-way basketball with Lilly Rotunno steering the ship and some great inside and out play from Angela Beadle to take a 21-14 lead into the first break. From there, Cairns went up another gear with four players scoring in double digits and controlling the boards and game.

For RedCity, Angela Beadle finished with 18 points, Lilly Rotunno with 11 points and nine assists, and Donica Cosby with 12 rebounds and two blocks.

As for the final score? RedCity 69 v Cairns 81.

Men’s team, sponsored by Redlands Sporting Club, Wellington Point.

Our men had a point to prove, and they came out strong in the first quarter. Every player on the court contributed in one way or another, including young guard Michael Afrakoff hitting a three off the bench.

RedCity was up six points at the break. Like the women’s game, Cairns came out swinging in the second and third quarters, with Lachlan Anderson (32 points) and Tad Dufelmeier (29 points) lighting up from deep.

RedCity went on a run, and once again, young guard Michael Afrakoff (eight points, two rebounds and two assists) provided some good minutes off the bench before clawing the game back in the fourth. However, it wasn’t enough. Jaylen Key finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Mitch Poulain had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The final score: RedCity 79 v Cairns 93.
