A grassy field, two teams of 13 players, two touch judges, and a referee. Sounds simple enough. But what is it about the iconic Wynnum Manly Seagulls that, year after year, continues to capture the local community’s spirits and hearts? It’s largely passion and pride in the jersey that drives players to succeed, to be their best, and the current crop is no exception.
This year’s team continues the proud red and green tradition of fast, hard rugby league that’s always entertaining and unites the bayside community.
And despite a loss to the Brisbane Broncos in the February trial match, the ’gulls players are chalking it up to experience, ready to tackle the HostPlus Cup competition with their trademark intensity and passion.
No team’s season is immune to ups and downs – the elation of big wins and the dejection of losses and injuries – which is why every rugby league season writes a new chapter in local history. It’s a story punctuated by heroes and villains – real or imagined – and it’s a journey worth your while as a spectator, especially at Kougari Oval. As a supporter, you’re part of that story, too.
The team’s guts and determination, combined with exceptional talent, make a Seagulls home game a must-see.
The Seagulls kick-off the 2022 season against the Burleigh Bears on March 20 at BMD Kougari Oval, followed by round two against the Northern Pride on March 26 at Iona College.
