The Wynnum Rugby Union Club is celebrating an exciting milestone in the development of its Girls’ Rugby Academy. In its second year, the academy has more than doubled in size, reflecting the increasing enthusiasm for girls’ rugby in the bayside community.
Established in 2024, the academy welcomed 22 girls aged 12 to 17 in its inaugural season. This year, that number has surged to over 50 registered players, highlighting the program’s success and the growing interest in the sport among young female athletes.
The Girls’ Rugby Academy at the Bugs was created to provide a supportive and inclusive environment where young girls can develop their rugby skills, fitness, and confidence. The program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and fostering a love for the game while ensuring that every participant, regardless of experience, has the opportunity to grow and succeed.
“The growth has been incredible,” said the club president. “It’s amazing to see so many girls keen to get involved in rugby. The enthusiasm, commitment, and talent on display are truly inspiring.”
The rapid expansion of the academy can be attributed to several factors, including increased awareness of women’s rugby, the club’s dedicated coaching staff, and strong support from the local community. Parents and players alike have praised the positive atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie that the academy fosters.
The club is excited to continue developing the program and providing more opportunities for young female athletes to excel in rugby. Wynnum Rugby Union Club is proud to be at the forefront of this exciting movement as the sport gains popularity among girls.
As registrations continue to rise, the club encourages any interested players to get involved and experience the thrill of rugby firsthand. With a strong foundation, the academy is set to go from strength to strength in the years to come.
