Athletes from the Redlands community are preparing to represent Team Queensland on the national stage at the Special Olympics Australia National Games 2026, taking place in Melbourne from 19-23 October.
A team of 36 athletes from the Redlands club will travel to compete across six sports: bocce, ten pin bowling, golf, swimming, table tennis and tennis. For many athletes, the National Games are the pinnacle event of the sporting calendar – a chance to test their skills, celebrate their achievements and connect with athletes from across the country.
The games also come during a milestone year for Special Olympics Australia, which is celebrating 50 years of empowering people with intellectual disability and/or autism through sport.
The Redlands club plays an important role in making these opportunities possible locally. The club provides a welcoming and inclusive environment where people with intellectual disability and/or autism can get involved in sport, build confidence and form lasting friendships.
Through weekly training opportunities across nine sports, athletes are supported in developing their skills while having fun and staying active. Just as importantly, the club creates a strong sense of community for athletes, families and volunteers.
For Redlands athletes, the journey to the National Games represents months, and often years, of dedication and training. Competing in Melbourne will be a chance to showcase their talent and determination while proudly representing their local community.
As Special Olympics Australia celebrates its 50th anniversary, the achievements of local clubs like Redlands highlight the lasting impact of inclusive sport; bringing people together, creating opportunities and ensuring everyone has the chance to play, compete and belong.
When Team Queensland heads to Melbourne in October, the Redlands community will be cheering them on every step of the way.
