From October 17 to 19, Point Lookout Boardriders will host the Gage Roads Straddie Invitational – a milestone event, and one of Australia’s most iconic grassroots surf comps. First launched 42 years ago, this year’s comp promises a weekend of full force and plenty of foam.
The Invitational draws top boardriding clubs from across Queensland and Northern NSW for a weekend of high-stakes, high-energy surfing. With divisions spanning under-16 juniors to over-35 masters, it’s a showcase of raw talent and club pride.
Spectators can expect to see some of Australia’s best junior surfers in action, alongside familiar faces from the World Surf League – past and present. The format includes two separate events: the classic Teams event, where eight surfers represent their club, and the fast-paced Tag Team showdown.
More than just a comp, the Straddie Invitational is a celebration of surf culture, community, and the legendary spirit of local boardriders. And after four decades, one thing’s clear: when it comes to bringing the heat, Point Lookout knows how to deliver!
It’s free to view the comp, so jump on the Straddie ferry, catch the bus to Point Lookout, and make a day of it.
