FROM THE WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS
Recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture, the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls marked their annual Indigenous Round at BMD Kougari Oval, celebrating the history, achievements and lasting contribution of First Nations people to rugby league and the wider community.
Held the weekend after NAIDOC Week, the Seagulls carried the spirit of culture into their Round 18 Hostplus Cup clash with the Ipswich Jets.
Deadly Choices was at the heart of the occasion, with a representative from the organisation designing the jerseys worn by Wynnum-Manly on the field.
The club promoted Indigenous health and wellbeing as part of the round, encouraging community members to show their support by grabbing a Seagulls shirt when completing a 715 health check at the Yulu-Burri-Ba clinic.
The BMD Premiership side was also in action, with the Seagulls women going head-to-head with the Mackay Cutters in a closely fought 16-14 defeat.
In the Queensland Cup, Garry Tuilekutu delivered a standout performance, scoring four tries in Wynnum-Manly’s 52-22 victory over the Ipswich Jets.
Tuilekutu’s performance earned him the Lionel Morgan Medal, honouring the man who broke new ground as the first Indigenous Australian to represent his country in rugby league.
The round put First Nations culture at the heart of the Seagulls’ home, recognising those who have shaped the game and those carrying it forward.
