A love of golf, a growing list of achievements and the support of his community are helping Carindale teenager Joshua Wood chase his dreams on the fairway.
The 19-year-old blind golfer recently claimed the Blind Golf Australia Daly Bay National Classic at Sarina Golf Club, adding another major title to an already impressive career.
Joshua’s success comes just six years after first picking up a golf club, with the teenager now holding the titles of Australian Blind Golf Junior Champion and Queensland Blind and Low Vision Golf Junior Champion.
For Joshua, golf began as a way to spend time with his father and older brother, who are both keen golfers, but quickly became a passion of his own.
Now playing regularly at Pacific Golf Club, Joshua enjoys the challenge of the sport and the opportunity it gives him to connect with family and friends.
Every time Joshua plays he relies on a caddy to help line up shots, estimate distances and locate the ball, but he said the sport’s minimal modifications allow him to compete alongside other golfers.
Joshua’s journey has been made possible through the support of his family, coaches, caddies, friends and community organisations, including Carina Leagues Club.
The club recently began supporting Joshua’s golf journey, helping with the costs associated with competing, including travel and caddy support.
Carina Leagues Club Vice Chairman of the Board Nigel Stainer said the club was proud to support a talented athlete who represented determination, resilience and community spirit.
With plans to compete in more national and international tournaments next year, including the British Blind Golf Open, as well as tournaments in America and Canada, Joshua hopes to one day claim victories on the world stage. He also hopes his story encourages other young people to follow their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face.
