Some of Australia’s best boardriding clubs will once again go head-to-head on the waves at North Stradbroke Island this October as the Gage Roads Straddie Invitational returns for a big weekend of surfing, friendly rivalry and classic island vibes.
More than 20 clubs from Queensland and northern New South Wales will descend on Main Beach at Point Lookout from October 16 to 18 for the event, which is renowned for being the world’s longest team surfing competition.
Now in its 43rd year, the event first began in 1983 as the Straddie Assault and has grown into a cornerstone of Australian surf culture.
With plenty happening both in and out of the water, event organiser Hugo Prasser said the Gage Roads Straddie Invitational offers the perfect mix of world-class surfing, entertainment and island atmosphere.
“A number of clubs from Noosa all the way to Byron Bay come to Straddie every year to compete because it’s a great place to catch some awesome waves, enjoy some friendly competition, and spend a great weekend on the island,” Hugo said.
“One of the best things about this event is the mix of competitors. We have everyone from grassroots boardriders right through to those who have been part of the World Tour circuit, including men, women and juniors.
“There will be two competitions over the course of the weekend – the classic Teams Event, where eight surfers combine to earn points for their club, and the crowd-favourite Tag Team Showdown, which always brings plenty of fast-paced action.”
Local pride will also be on the line as the Point Lookout Boardriders look to add more titles to their name as they aim to make the most of their home advantage.
“Last year they finished second in the Team competition and fourth in the Tag Team, so they will definitely be out to win this year.”
The action continues long after the final heat, with live music at the local pub plus food stalls on the headland supporting the Point Lookout Boardriders Club.
With its east-facing beaches and exposure to the open Pacific Ocean, Straddie is renowned for producing consistent swells, making it one of the best surfing spots in the world.
“Straddie is one of the best places in the world to host a surfing competition, and we’re very lucky it happens to be in our own backyard,” Hugo said.
“Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the world of competitive surfing, it’s well worth a trip to come over to beautiful Straddie to cheer on the boardriders, enjoy the sun and the sand, and support the local businesses.”
