The State Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund has come up trumps for the Wynnum Manly Bridge Club, providing a $5353 grant for the club to purchase a dealing machine and 12 card tables.

Club members used to spend hours dealing 40 hands of cards twice weekly for the Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon games at the Municipal Hall in Bay Terrace. The dealing machine takes 30 seconds to deal a hand, so the volunteers love it. The club is grateful to Joan Pease for her support of our application.

The club celebrated its 40th birthday in 2021 and is growing strongly, gaining 19 new members last year. Early in the pandemic, the club subscribed to a weekly online tournament allowing members to play at home. Even our most senior members embraced the technology, but all missed the social interaction of playing face-to-face.

Learning to play bridge is like learning another language and is a great way to keep the brain active while you are enjoying yourself. The club regularly runs classes and the next round of classes will begin at the Wynnum Library on Thursday March 3.
