CONTRIBUTED BY THE OLDER WOMEN’S NETWORK

In March, the Older Women’s Network (OWN) celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) with enthusiasm, gathering members from Capalaba and Wynnum Manly to mark the occasion. The theme for this year’s IWD, #EmbraceEquity, was embraced with open arms.

The event featured a captivating talk by former Senator Claire Moore, ambassador for OWN Qld and president of the Qld Executive Committee for the United Nations Association of Australia. Claire drew inspiration from Emma Miller (1839–1917), who championed equal pay and equal opportunity for women and was the foundation President of the Woman’s Equal Franchise Association (1894 – 1905). Claire’s address was informative and empowering, and it left everyone feeling inspired.

Councillor Adelia Berridge (Division 9, Capalaba) spoke briefly about the challenges faced by women in politics in Australia. It was heartening to have her support, and everyone was grateful for her address.

The event also marked the eighth birthday of the Capalaba branch and the second birthday of the Wynnum Manly branch. These groups meet regularly to encourage mutual support and companionship, providing social and educational opportunities for women in their senior years. OWN also hosts monthly guest speaker events and social outings, making it a fun and engaging experience for everyone involved.

OWN Qld contributes to the community in various ways, including the “Knickers with Notes” and “Trauma Teddies” projects for the local ambulance committee and the “Hope in a Suitcase” project. Members take pride in serving the community and always look for ways to give back.
