FROM WYNNUM MANLY ARTS

Wynnum Manly Arts is excited to present Steampunk – Art In Florence. This fabulous event will run over a weekend in October, showcasing markets, food, rides, music, vintage automobiles, teapot racing, parasol duelling and more.

Plus, when you enter the spirit of the event and dress up, fabulous prizes are up for grabs.

So I hear you ask, what is Steampunk?

If you haven’t heard the term before, you can be forgiven. You can be forgiven if you think it sounds a little scary. After all, anything with the word ‘punk’ in it tends to send shivers down our spine.

Fear not; nothing sinister is coming to Wynnum, but you will want to drag yourself out of bed to check it out.

Here’s a little background history on Steampunk.

Like most people, you probably haven’t heard of the book Morlock Night by K. W. Jeter. Written in 1987, the book started a movement. It fictitiously described a genre in which steam, not electricity, drove technological advancements. It was called Steampunk. How novel!

Jeter’s fans (and he must have had many to start a movement) embraced the concept, and it has been gathering steam (excuse the pun) ever since.

It is now recognised worldwide as an artistic and cultural movement that encompasses clothing fashions, fiction writing, sculpture, graphic art, film, jewellery and much more. Worldwide festivals with thousands of followers are held to celebrate this new art form.

Event organiser, Sandra Temple, is an avid fan of all things Steampunk. As an artist in her own right and having attended many Steampunk events over the years, her dream was to bring one to Wynnum. She has teamed with Wynnum Manly Arts, and together, with a band of enthusiastic assistants and volunteers, they are gearing up for a wonderful event. Come and show your support and bring your family and friends.

Steampunk – Art In Florence will be held on the 8th and 9th of October 2022. Check out the Wynnum Manly ARTS Facebook page for more information and hints on how to dress up for the event.
