Home computer tutoring equals more confident learning - The Community Leader and Real Estate New and Views

FROM BRISBANE SENIORS ONLINE

Brisbane Seniors Online is a not-for-profit community group that has been helping seniors and over 50s with computers, emerging technology and the internet in the greater Brisbane area for 20 years.

Assistance is provided by volunteer unpaid mentors who provide tutoring in the learner’s own home, on their own device and a pace that suits the learner. New learners as well as volunteer mentors are sought in most areas of the Brisbane Seniors Online coverage area.

Learners applying to join BSOL can indicate their current experience and knowledge, the devices and operating systems they use and what they would like to learn. The learner is then matched to a suitable mentor who can assist them in home tutoring. Learners as a guide receive 12 hours of home lessons and then ongoing support for the balance of their membership year.

During the coronavirus crisis, there has been a proliferation of scams by opportunistic fraudsters using email, text messages and phone calls. Closure of shop fronts has resulted in more online activity, leading to an increased risk of fraud and cyber-crime.

Learners pay a one-off joining fee of $20, and $45 for a year. This gives them around 12 hours of home lessons and then ongoing support for the balance of their membership year.

Brisbane Seniors Online would like to acknowledge the funding and support received from Joan Pease, MP for Lytton.
