FROM LESLEY JOHNSON, CLUB SECRETARY

In July this year, The Probus Club of Wynnum and Manly celebrates the 40th anniversary of the founding of the club – the second oldest Probus Club in Queensland!

What is Probus? It’s fun and friendship in retirement. When you retire, often friendships that are developed through a working life tend to fade away. Probus is a great way to develop new friendships. Probus Clubs offer a range of activities for members, depending on their interests, lifestyle and location.

What about Wynnum Manly Probus Club? We are active retirees (and some semi-retired members) who enjoy the opportunity to participate in many activities that keep us young at heart and engaged with our community. We meet monthly at the Wynnum Bowls Club.

Our president and committee work hard to ensure that our meetings have a minimum of formality and a maximum of enjoyment and social connection.

Every month, we have interesting guest speakers, and we get to know our members better through interviews with one of our group members. Following our monthly meeting, members can opt to stay on for a well-catered Friendship Lunch at our venue.

Our guest speakers have covered a wide range of topics, from the history of our region, through poets and authors, meteorology, snake catchers, Olympic torches, medical researchers, to exercise physiologists…and we aren’t just passive listeners, either!

Our club has a range of interest groups, run by our members, including walking, board games, coffee mornings, theatre and film, music makers and book swap. We also have regular get togethers apart from meetings, such as picnics, dine outs, barefoot bowls and barbecues. It’s all go – with our monthly club calendar filled with opportunities that members can enjoy.

Then there are the bus trips. A trip every month to locations around Brisbane and the coasts, with interesting destinations, sightseeing and convivial lunches – something for our members to look forward to each month. We also embark on extended tours. Thanks to our talented tour director, we’ve had quite a choice, from 5-star luxury at Noosa to affordable cabins at Lightning Ridge. Of course, holidaying with friends is just the best!

We are a very vibrant and growing club – so much so that we’ve had to set up a waitlist – but you are very welcome to join that list. Check us out on Facebook and see for yourself the fun and friendship to be had with Probus.
