Valentine’s Day is all about love, romance, flowers, and chocolate – but have you ever wondered about the origins of this holiday?
Valentine’s Day is a tradition dating back to Ancient Roman times. Although some believe the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival, it is widely accepted that the holiday commemorates the death of St. Valentine, a priest in 3rd century Rome. It has been associated with love and romance since the Middle Ages, when it is believed that February 14 marked the start of the mating season for birds in Europe, signalling a time of courtship.
Romantic traditions like writing love letters, giving gifts of red roses and chocolates have developed over centuries and vary widely across cultures. It would appear that the way to an Aussie’s heart is via our stomach. On Valentine’s Day 2021, Australians collectively spent approximately $427 million on dining out, $127 million on dining in, and $76 million on chocolates (Source: Finder.com.au).
